Why is my AC blowing warm air?
Warm air from an air conditioner usually means the outdoor unit isn't running while the indoor blower is — most often a tripped outdoor breaker, a failed capacitor, or a thermostat set to HEAT or the fan left on ON. If the outdoor unit is running and the air is still warm, the system has likely lost refrigerant.

What you can safely check
- Thermostat
- COOL mode, fan on AUTO, setpoint below room temperature.
- Is the outdoor unit running?
- Go outside and listen. Silent means a power problem; humming without the fan spinning usually means a failed capacitor.
- Outdoor breaker
- The condenser often has its own breaker and an outdoor disconnect. Reset the breaker once only.
- Filter
- A frozen coil from restricted airflow presents as warm air once it fully ices over.
What’s probably going on
- Failed capacitor
- Inexpensive part, very common failure, and the reason a humming unit never starts its fan.
- Refrigerant leak
- Gradual loss of cooling over weeks, ending in air that's barely cool at all.
- Contactor failure
- The relay that starts the outdoor unit pits and burns over time and stops making contact.
- Frozen evaporator coil
- Ice blocks airflow entirely. It has to thaw before anything can be diagnosed properly.
Stop here and call
Don't open the outdoor unit's electrical cover. Capacitors hold a dangerous charge even with the power off and the breaker pulled.
What we do about it
We test the capacitor and contactor under load, check charge against the manufacturer's spec, and find the leak rather than just adding refrigerant.
